Dreaming Back to Nature: Paintings by Lee Shien-Wen

Born in Taipei in 1947, Lee Shien-Wen is the founder of the Lion Art. His love of painting was first kindled during his high school years, and he founded a society of outdoor sketching in the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University, where he was studying. Since 1992 he has been studying calligraphy with famous calligraphers like Chen Yun-chen and Chang Kuang-bin. Since 1996 he has extended his creative career from calligraphy to ink painting.

With a solid cultivation in culture and art, along with his continual care for the natural environment of Taiwan, Lee Shien-Wen has climbed all important mountains in Taiwan and created many landscape sketches with ink wash. In his works, we can see how he integrates calligraphy with formative techniques of Western painting. A fresh spirit emanates from his works that is different from the traditional landscape painting; we can detect a leisurely literati style in his works. In recent years, he has presented his works in several exhibitions. In 2004 he joined Lu Ting-ching and Cheng Chih-kuei in a joint exhibition The Tip of Mount Jade Trio Exhibition in Howard Salon, Taipei. In 2011, he and Chang Kuang-bin presented a joint exhibition Simplicity Meets Ethereality: A Passion for the Spirit of Painting. In 2012, he presented A Path to Hidden Beauty - Lee Shien-Wen's Solo Exhibition at National Central University’s Art & Culture Center. His artistic career grew more complete through these exhibitions.

Lee’s paintings focus on the observation of life and nature. He arranges his composition with a humane concern. His brushstrokes speak out his expectations for the society. The aesthetic experience built up in his imageries aims to highlight the beauty of nature and the changes of time. In this way he explores the subtle interaction between human and nature. We can find a unified ideal of art in his works without any jarring note of complaint or intangible romantic sentiment. He simply depicts his many beautiful memories of this land with a deep sincerity.

As one saying goes, “while the external nature serves as the teacher for the artist, the true art must be created via artist’s own heart.” Lee Shien-Wen has travelled and sketched in nature, absorbed spiritual nutrient from the external world, and reflected on the essence of life in his heart. Combining intellect and experience, he transforms his thoughts and feelings via brush and ink into works that show observation, reflection, and experience of nature. This exhibition presents 35 sets of recent works by Lee Shien-Wen, illustrating his vivid personal styles and he deep care of the land and nature.
